The South East Metro Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect Centre (MHWCC) in Dandenong officially opened its doors in June 2023, bringing critical support to families, carers, and kin of those living with mental health and substance use challenges in south-east Melbourne. Located at 51 Robinson Street, this purpose-built centre is the result of a partnership between Better Health Network (BHN), Berry Street Take Two, and the Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency (VACCA), all working together to create a culturally safe and supportive space.
The centre’s design and staffing are informed by the lived and living experiences of carers, offering direct peer support, advocacy, and service navigation. The opening was marked by a Welcome to Country by Bunurong Elder Elaine Taylor, followed by a smoking ceremony led by Djarrin Blow Wilson, a Garrang Garrang Man and Barkindji Clan member. The event was attended by dignitaries, including Mental Health Commissioner Jacqueline Gibson and Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health Tim Richardson.
Before moving into the new building, the team gathered for a traditional cleansing ceremony, led by VACCA’s Aboriginal Cultural Practice Lead, to infuse the space with positive energy. The centre is now fully operational, providing a much-needed hub for the more than 60,000 Victorians who are mental health carers. Open Monday to Friday, the Connect Centre is a safe, welcoming environment where carers can seek support, participate in therapeutic and cultural programs, or simply take a moment for themselves.
This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, and we extend our gratitude to the team for their dedication in making this vision a reality.
The centre was thrilled to commence operating in June 2024 and begin providing the much-needed assistance to family, carers, supporters and kin of those living with mental health and/or substance use challenges across south-east Melbourne.
